Nostalgic Lookback: Video Rental

If you were born at any time prior to the 2010s, you would remember these places being plentiful. At first they were places to rent VHS tapes as well as purchase whatever other merch they were selling, then eventually DVDs and even video games were added to the selection. With the advancing digital age where you can now rent movies digitally, the need to do so with physical copies decreased, leading to the gradual decline and disappearance of these stores.

Nostalgic Lookback: The Joker

It was during one of those motel stays that the TV was on, the station was playing the new-ish Batman animated series, and I saw this:

My memory of watching the episode passes me by - I don't even think I saw all of it before bedtime. I just very specifically remember that opening title card and the scene that followed, with prisoners singing "Jingle Bells" together and then this one guy, the Joker, sings his own verses as he escapes on a rocket-propelled Christmas tree. That was my introduction to the Joker, the thing that gave me the awareness that he was a Batman villain. I didn't know at the time that this so happened to also be the arch enemy of Batman. To me, he was just a cool, fun villain who really stood out. But I would come to learn how much more than that he was as my childhood went on.

What clinched my love of the Joker as a villain was this VHS tape in the The Adventures of Batman & Robin series. It contained the very same "Christmas With The Joker" episode I'd remembered and another one called "The Laughing Fish", which was styled like an actual horror story but never really scared me 'cause I had too much fun watching what the Joker and his henchmen got up to. Since I could pause the tape as the credits rolled, this is also when I learned the name of the man providing Joker's voice: Mark Hamill, the very same Mark Hamill who played the hero of The Star Wars Trilogy.

I even ended up watching the now classic 1989 Batman movie with Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and purchased Batman: The Killing Joke from my local comic book store. (That second one was a big mistake on my part - I could not follow any of it at the age I was at. It was later in the early 2000s that I could "get it" and appreciate it.)

Ignore what Joaquin Phoenix says: there most certainly IS a Joker, and he will remain one of my top favorite fictional villains of all time.

a few years ago, like 2020ish, the obi-wan fucker community decided he smelled like this candle from target. it was everywhere. if you google “tumblr obi-wan candle” it’s the first result. to this day i continue to repurchase this candle. i have two in my room rn.
